WRITING
FOR LATE NIGHT TV
A FIVE-WEEK INTENSIVE COURSE
Beginning Monday, June 26th, 2017 at
7pm – 10pm over 5 Thursdays (ends July 31st, no class on July 3rd).
Have you ever laughed at a
monologue joke on The Tonight Show or cracked up over a bit on Conan and
thought “Hey, I could write that!” Well… here’s
your chance! In our unique Writing for Late Night TV course, students
will learn basic late night comedy writing including
monologue jokes, desk pieces, and
remotes, with the goal of becoming technically proficient,
confident, and comfortable creating a packet to submit material to various late
night television programs. All with the emphasis of finding your
unique voice as a comedy writer! This class is taught by veteran
television writer Gabe
Abelson, a prolific stand-up comedian who spent 4-1/2
years as the head monologue writer for Late Show with David
Letterman, garnering four Emmy nominations and three
WriterÇs Guild nominations. Gabe’s numerous other staff
writing credits include Politically Incorrect with Bill
Maher (ABC), The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC)
and The Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn (CBS), in
addition to having served as the producer / head writer for The New
Tom Green Show (MTV).
THE
SITCOM WRITERS’ ROOM: SIX WEEKS TO SCRIPT!
A SIX-WEEK INTENSIVE COURSE
Beginning Thursday, July 6th, 2017 at
7pm – 10pm over 6 Thursdays (ending August 10th).
Maybe your dream job is
working in a real writers’ room on the staff of a hit TV sitcom?
But how do you get that job? What is it like? And
most importantly… can I really do it? In our intense six-week
course, students will begin to craft their very own sitcom
script in a classroom experience designed to mimic working
in an actual TV writers’ room. Taught by writer Steve Trautmann
(host of the Writers Guild of America/West’s official podcast 3rd &
Fairfax) – through a combination of lectures, examples, worksheets, and
exercises – as well as copious amounts of actual writing! – this course will
take students through the process of development, and using
their own original characters and ideas, show them how to apply proper
technique and structure that will result in a finished
professional sitcom pilot script. That’s right… at the
end of this six-week course (with plenty of your own hard work and creativity,
naturally!), you will leave this class with an ACTUAL SCRIPT IN HAND,
written entirely by you!
