SATURDAY, April 29th, 2017:
10am-7pm
SUNDAY, April 30th, 2017: 10am-7pm
This intensive,
20-hour, hands-on-directing weekend workshop
focuses on instructing filmmakers the primary role and responsibility of the
director as a storyteller. You will learn the key creative and technical skills
needed to be a working director in Hollywood by putting them into practice by
directing your own scene and discussing and getting
feedback on your choices at the end of the course.
YOU WILL LEARN:
* The key skills of working with and understanding the screenplay
* How to translate your ideas into meaningful, moving images
* The process of working with actors – from casting to the rehearsal process, how to guide them, how to give notes and feedback, what to look for, and how to know when youäó»ve found it.
* How to choose lenses and how to frame, compose, and motivate your camera to help tell your story
* How to analyze a screenplay – what questions to ask, and where to find the answers.
* Shot selection, conflict, theme, subtext and tone
* How to choose between static shots or moving the camera
* Understanding of eye-lines for shooting proper coverage
* How to use storyboards, shot lists, and floorplans to refine your vision and ultimately enhance your visual approach.
* How to communicate, guide, collaborate, and inspire actors during the rehearsal process which leads to powerful performances that ring true and leap off the screen
* How to collaborate with a director of photography, choose lenses, framing, and composition, and motivate your camera to shoot and cover a scene in the most economical, efficient and compelling way
PLUS:
Each filmmaker will then practically apply your learning, and be given an opportunity to DIRECT YOUR OWN SCENE from a high-quality screenplay by a top-tier Hollywood screenwriter, using professional actors, cameras, and DP. You will undertake the entire directoräó»s process from script analysis, to working and rehearsing with actors and blocking shots – followed by an actual shoot, and then screening your work for the class where you will get to discuss your choices and receive a critique.
