Producer and No Budget Film School founder Mark Stolaroff conducts off-the-record interviews with no-budget filmmakers, who against all odds, willed their no-budget features into being. Get the inside scoop on how these micro-budget masterpieces were put together — all the nitty-gritty — directly from the filmmakers themselves!
Stolaroff moderates the discussion with the filmmaker, shows clips and stills that illustrate the ideas and techniques divulged, and then opens it up for questions from attendees, all live.
This episode features indie filmmakers Zander and Elliot Weaver, writers, directors, producers of the sci-fi feature sensation Cosmos – which was made for only $7,000, but has taken the world by storm, getting world-wide distribution through Gravitas, and currently streaming in the U.S. on Amazon Prime. The Weavers did everything – write, produce, direct, shoot, edit, build props, construct sets, design the sound, and create all the visual effects – they did everything except act in the film and write the music – and the results are beyond impressive!
There’s enough no-budget lessons here to fill three shows, and we’ll talk about all of it, showing clips and stills along the way, and answering all your questions. These guys live and work in the UK, and they’re really busy right now, so this is an incredible opportunity to discuss their work before they move on to the next (likely much bigger) thing!

ABOUT THE WEAVER BROTHERS & COSMOS:
Elliot and Zander Weaver are filmmaking brothers from Birmingham, UK. Since 2010, they have been creating television documentaries for companies like Discovery, PBS, Canal+, and UKTV. For three years they tried to get a 7-figure budget sci-fi feature off the ground, but always ran into the same problem – they had no feature film experience, and no one was going to risk that kind of money on “first-timers.” So, they decided to create a project they could finance and produce themselves, and Cosmos was born. Filming and post production took 5 years, with the Weavers acting as the whole crew and post production team, shooting on a first-generation Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, and building homemade rigs and dollies, along with all the props and set pieces. Their labor paid off, as Gravitas Ventures released the $7,000 film in theaters and on VOD in the U.S. in November 2019, and then around the world. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
Cosmos explores the thrilling first hours of first contact when three amateur astronomers accidentally intercept what they believe to be a faint, coded signal from a distant alien civilization. But the truth they uncover is even more incredible than any of them dare to believe.
