PEN DENSHAM (Producer, ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES, BACKDRAFT) takes a non-dogmatic approach to finding your own, personal creative power, and he will share secrets to selling your creations.  As an Academy Award nominated producer, director, and writer, whose productions have grossed more than a billion dollars, Densham will reveal how he helped to re-envision the Robin Hood story, creating a new characterization and adding new concepts culminating in a spec script sale for ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES and production of the film for Morgan Creek Productions and Warner Brothers.  The film became one of Warner Brothers’ largest grossing movies ever, spinning off games, toy lines and the top music single from Bryan Adams, “Everything I Do, I Do It For You”.  Densham will also share how he helped produce BACKDRAFT with Ron Howard directing for Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures.  Backdraft generated one of the longest-lasting attractions at the Universal Studios Tour. Densham was a Producer on BLOWN AWAY with Jeff Bridges, THE DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS with Jodie Foster, LARGER THAN LIFE with Bill Murray, and BUFFALO SOLDIERS with Danny Glover.  Densham also wrote and directed HOUDINI, an $8 million TNT feature for television starring Johnathon Schaech, Mark Ruffalo and Emile Hirsch.  He has also written and directed MOLL FLANDERS, starring Morgan Freeman & Robin Wright.  He is a Producer on the feature, LAST FULL MEASURE (2019) with Samuel L. Harris Tulchin (Cornell) will share the strategies insiders use to finance independent projects.  After graduating Cornell University and Hastings Law School, he has practiced law since 1978.  He has lectured extensively at forums such as UCLA, USC, AFI, IFP, IFTA, has been an adjunct professor of law at Southwestern law school in Los Angeles, and brings a wealth of studio and private practice experience.  He has served as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs and General Counsel for Cinema Group; General Counsel and Head of Business Affairs for KCET Television; Senior Counsel for United Artists; and Director of Business Affairs at MGM Television.  His clients have included SONY, Ed Pressman, Ice Cube, David Lynch, Gary Lucchesi, Showtime, HBO, PolyGram, Summit Entertainment, and numerous independent producers, writers, directors and actors.  Tulchin has produced or executive produced over 15 motion pictures.  Tulchin has supervised the production of The Third Person, written and directed by Paul Haggis, starring Liam Neeson, Mila Kunis, James Franco, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Maria Bello, and Kim Basinger; Killing Season starring Robert De Niro and John Travolta; and Singularity directed by Roland Joffe and starring Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton.  He is Executive Producing and Supervising Legal Affairs for the upcoming feature, The Comeback Trail, Directed by George Gallo (BAD BOYS, MIDNIGHT RUN), starring Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Tommy Lee Jones.  He is the co-author of a book considered one of the bibles of the motion picture industry entitled “The Independent Film Producer’s Survival Guide.”

ABOUT THE MENTORS & SPEAKERS:

 

JOHN KIM (Yale) was a VP of Digital Distribution for Paramount and the Worldwide Executive Director for Walt Disney Home Entertainment before disrupting digital distribution with the formation of Deep C Digital. He has sold both independent and major studio movies to Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, VUDU, Starz, Showtime, Google, and other major digital platforms. Before entering the home entertainment industry, he served as a band manager at Nabisco and Marketing Director at Mattel. Recently, John co-founded with Tyler Maddox, Voices Film Foundation (VFF), a nonprofit corporation that unites and promotes people of color in the entertainment industry. VFF’s Advisory Board is a who’s who of entertainment including Ving Rhames, Master P, Vivica Fox, and top executives from major corporations. He is a graduate of Yale University and has an MBA from the Kellogg Management School fo Business at Northwestern University.

 

JAMES LEVINE (Emerson), as a Casting Director, James brings 25 years’ experience both in front of and behind the camera to Action Casting. He will share the tips and techniques gained over 20 years as a successful actor, producer, director and casting director of 1000’s of commercials and theatrical projects for such notable clients as Apple, Microsoft, Chase, Capital One, Sears, Disney, The Voice, and Comedy Central. Levine has taught classes in Los Angeles and internationally with Stella Adler Academy and TVI Studios. In addition to his “Bring It!” book, he also co-hosts and produces an online interview show for Casting Frontier called The Curve. James Levine is a member of the Commercial Casting Director Association (CCDA), Screen Actors Guild (SAG/AFTRA), and represented by BX2 Management.

 

JIM HART‘s (Columbia, HOOK, CONTACT, DRACULA) writing/producing credits include; HOOK, directed by Steven Spielberg based on an idea by Hart’s then 6 year old Son, Jake, BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND, directed by Brian Henson, and CONTACT, directed by Robert Zemeckis. Other writing/producing credits include: MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENTSEIN, TUCK EVERLASTING, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK: THE REAL STORY. SAHARA, LARA CROFT: TOMBRAIDER – THE CRADLE OF LIFE, AUGUST RUSH, EPIC, and the TV series, CROSSBONES. Hart has served on the faculty of the Columbia University Graduate Film program. He is a founding member of the Writer’s Guild Initiative board. His renowned story mapping tool app, THE HART CHART, was launched online at the Austin Film Festival. Most recently, Jim is the Creator of the new National Geographic television series, THE HOT ZONE.

KEVIN WINSTON (Yale, Harvard) is the founder and CEO of Digital LA, the largest LA-based networking group of professionals in tech, startups, and digital entertainment. He is the founder of Silicon Beach Fest, the first and largest tech entertainment conference in LA. Previously, he worked at Fox, MySpace, and IGN where he created integrated marketing campaigns for movies, TV, and games. He worked at Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, and McKinsey & Company. Kevin graduated from Yale, and has a masters from Harvard. He recently moderated the San Diego Comic-Con Panel “Diversity: Women Writers and Producers Take Charge” as well as the Inclusion Summit spearheaded by Yale in Hollywood with partners at the Television Academy Media Group and the PGA Diversity Committee.

 

JONATHAN SKURNIK (Dartmouth) is a documentary producer, director and cinematographer. Five of his films have broadcast on PBS. His films have been screened at over two hundred film festivals throughout the world. He has won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the American Indian film festival, the Change Maker Award at the Media That Matters Film Festival, the Audience Award for Outstanding Achievement at Outfest, the Harry Chapin Media Award for films about poverty and Best Documentary Award at the UrbanTV film Festival. Jonathan has worked in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South and North America. His films have been supported by ITVS, Vision Maker Media, the MacArthur Foundation, the Fledgling Fund, the Paul Robeson Fund, The Arcus Foundation and many other foundations and private donors. He serves as the chair of the steering committee of New Day Films, the only cooperatively run educational film distribution company in the US. In addition to his documentary work, Jonathan founded the Workfare Media Initiative, The Youth and Gender Media Project and The Cante Sica Foundation, three foundation-funded grassroots audience outreach and engagement projects that provide transformational educational experiences through facilitated screenings and discussions and immersive digital resources.

 

LISHA YAKUB SEVANIAN (USC, Producer / Attorney, Sony Pictures Television) is currently building a brand of youth-orientated content.
