Personal Bio

Dear colleagues!

My name is Janna (Jamilia) Golubitskaya, I am a correspondent for the social problems department of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper (Russia, Moscow).

I would like to bring to your attention a script based on my book TEHERAN-1360 (the book was published in London in 2022).

About myself and the work:

I am a staff journalist for the largest Russian private daily socio-political newspaper “Moskovsky Komsomolets” with 13 years of experience and the author of 9 books (links below).

The novel “Tehran-1360” is based on my real childhood memories. The theme is exclusive, there are no works of art on this topic – all the more, through the eyes of a child (this is a popular technique in Persian literature; among contemporary authors, it is used by Afghan writer Khaled Hosseini (“Running after the Wind”, “Thousands of Splendid Suns”).

The life of the Soviet colony (the embassy, the hospital of the Red Cross and other Soviet missions in Tehran) during the crucial period for Iran, 1978-1982. and in the last decade of the existence of the USSR, today it is described by only three^

Former Soviet Ambassador to Iran V.M. Vinogradov:

Russian resident L.V. Shebarshin:

and a traitor V.A.Kuzichkin, whose book was published in 90th year in London:

All three of them defend their own position in that difficult time with lofty words, without being distracted by small sorrows and joys, fears, doubts and aspirations of ordinary Soviet people working in a country engulfed in revolution and then war.

Now a fourth eyewitness has been added to them – a Soviet elementary school student who remembers not only these three, but also how and with what we lived – those who were fortunate enough to be on a business trip during the period of deep “stagnation” in the Soviet Union.

I lived in that very embassy where the Russian Ambassador, poet, composer, writer and nobleman Alexander Griboyedov was killed in 1829. Strictly speaking, not right there, but nearby – in Baghe Ilchi (Ambassador’s Garden) lane, but neither that lane nor the house any longer exists)

In the same place where during famous 3 days in history  28 Nov – 1Dec 1943 the fate of the planet was decided by the “big three” – Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt.

And across the street from the American embassy, in which on November 5, 1979, before our very eyes (we were looking out the windows), American diplomats were taken hostage.

The USSR Embassy in Tehran in 1980 also experienced 3 large-scale attacks – in the early morning of January 1, 1980, April 25 (in honor of the anniversary of the Afghan revolution) and December 27, 1980 to remind the Russians of the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

My book describes all 3 attacks on the Soviet embassy – as I saw it in my 10 years.

In the title of the novel, the figure 1360 appears – this is the 1360th year according to the solar Hijri – the calendar according to which Iran has lived since Zoroastrian times. According to the European calendar, it came on March 21, 1981.

In fact, my family lived in Iran not for a year, but for 5 years, and we saw with our own eyes all the significant historical events – the Islamic revolution, the flight of the Shah’s family, the return of Ayatollah Khomeini to his homeland, the seizure of American hostages, the Iran-Iraq war.

I arrived in Iran with my parents at the age of 7, and left at 11, but despite the tender age, the events of those years are forever imprinted in my memory. After the attack on the USSR embassy in Tehran on January 1, 1980, all women and children were evacuated to the Union, the school at the embassy was closed. But five children secretly from the ambassador were left on the territory of the Soviet hospital of the Red Cross – these were four boys from 3 to 8 years old and me. I didn’t go to school for 3 years, so the Tehran period became the most unusual and brightest in my life.

Having restored the chronology with the help of my personal diary, which I kept in those years, I decided to share my memories of the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution. After all, then no one believed that it would be for a long time. But as a result, the Islamic revolution went through the Soviet Union and many other world changes.

The story is told from the perspective of a girl of 7-11 years old, with an unbiased childlike gaze, not burdened with knowledge of politics and even history, observing how the city and the country are changing in connection with the events taking place.

My book is not only about Iran and Iranians, it is also a portrait of the time and three generations of Soviet people (mine, my parents and the older generation, which at that time in my understanding included our ambassador, our resident and my grandmother), what we are everyone came to the turning point for Russia in the 90s and why.

It seems to me that today it is extremely important to pay attention to the topic of Iran.

Iran is a country on which peace on our planet largely depends today.

For a person watching TV, Iran is a sponsor of world terrorism.

For the connoisseur of history and culture, Persia is the heir to the greatest of cultures.

Today, this controversial power is again at a crossroads, on another round of isolation.

And how Iran and the Iranians behave when they find themselves at a crossroads, you can learn from my book “Tehran-1360”.

Published versions:

To date, the novel “TEHERAN-1360” has been published only in the UK, since in 2019 it won the Open Eurasia-2019 competition and received a grant for publication in a specific London publishing house Hertfordshire Press https://www.hertfordshirepress.com/

The British version is about 1/3 of the original manuscript (emphasis on life within closed Soviet organizations), the contract expires in December 2022.

The full version of the novel is published only in Iran, translated into Farsi on the initiative of the Iranian cultural center in Moscow, I just gave Iran manuscript as a gift.

But the book did not actually reach the Russian reader: buying on Amazon, taking into account delivery for Russians, is too much

So I posted the collection from the one not included in the British version on the Liters platform (but this is only 1/3 of the original manuscript):

MADE IN USSR: Adventures of a Soviet schoolgirl in Islamic Tehran.

Thus, another 1/3 of the manuscript did not sound anywhere else at all.
