This primer course is packed with
practical examples, fun stories (sometimes terrifying), and easy-to-understand
introductions to basic photography techniques that will help to form an
essential knowledge base for any professional in the motion-picture
industry.
Taking inspiration from great works
and through practical presentations, the goal is to develop an understanding
and appreciation for The 8 Cs of
Cinematography:
1.
Cameras: 3D, HD, 1080, 4K, 8K!? What do
you need?
2.
Compositon: Lens length, depth of field,
camera height and angle, balance of light and dark äóî how do you choose what’s
best for your scene?
3.
Color: How can color influence mood,
performance, and overall story?
4.
Convention: Establishing shots, inserts,
mise en scíÂne – knowing the language of cinema.
5. Continuity /
Cutting: Ensuring that your individual shots will edit
together
6.
Choreography: Movement of actors and
elements within the frame, and moving the frame itself.
7.
Completion: Postproduction and color
grading.
8. CGI:
How do effects affect your project?

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Robert Kirbyson is
a director with an extensive background in cinematography. His
feature directing credits include the family film Snowmen,
the acclaimed comedy web series Ctrl for
NBC, and the thriller Redline, for which
he also served as Director of Photography. Robert began his career in
Canada as a cinematographer and storyboard artist for many series including Sesame
Street. He has also served as a filmmaking professor at
many institutions, including seven years as the cinematography instructor at
his Alma Mater, The University of British Columbia.
