A not-to-be-missed one-time event for filmmakersproducers, writers, and content creators of all types –  who want to know the inside scoop on how to get your low budget (or no-budget!) film made, and distributed from instructors who have already done it!

No Budget Film School presents an all-new series of live, FREE Zoom webinars No Budget Confidential.

Producer and No Budget Film School founder Mark Stolaroff conducts off-the-record interviews with no-budget filmmakers, who against all odds, willed their no-budget features into being.  Get the inside scoop on how these micro-budget masterpieces were put together — what laws were broken, whose body parts were sold to science, which deals were made with the Devil — directly from the filmmakers themselves!

Stolaroff moderates the discussion with the filmmaker, shows clips and stills that illustrate the ideas and techniques divulged, and then opens it up for questions from attendees, all live.

This episode features indie filmmaker Laura Somers, co-writer/director of the $60,000 feature Rich Kids.  Laura details the inspiring story of making her underdog film, which after a slow start on the festival trail, ultimately caught its stride, winning 16 festival awards and garnering international distribution. It can currently be seen on Netflix.

Did someone tell you that Netflix no longer licenses no-budget indies with no-name actors?  Yeah, I thought that too.  But earlier this year they licensed Rich Kids, a $60k feature shot in Houston, TX starring a number of talented, but unknown, young local actors.  We’ll take you through the entire journey of how this underdog film was made and distributed.  And if you’re one of those people who has spent the last decade or two wondering when or if you’ll ever make your own movie, Laura lived that life too.  Until she didn’t, and made it happen for herself.  It’s an inspiring story, trust me.

ABOUT LAURA SOMERS AND RICH KIDS:

Laura Somers is a graduate of NYU/Tisch’s Playwrights Horizons Theater School, where she first cut her teeth directing actors.  She has been involved in theatre, film, and television ever since.  In Austin in the late 90s, she co-founded the critically-acclaimed, award-winning theatre company The Dirigo Group, directing over 30 plays before moving to New York and directing Off-Broadway.  She got her start in film as the assistant to director Jonathan Nossiter on his Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Sunday.  She has numerous other film credits, but her experience there led to a successful career editing reality TV, commercials, and web series, from 2006-2014.  Tired of waiting for permission to do what she always dreamed of — direct her own feature film — she raised funds on Seed & Spark and went back to her hometown of Houston, TX to make her feature directoral debut, Rich Kids.  After winning numerous festivals awards, she struck a deal with Premiere Entertainment for worldwide sales.  Her domestic distributor, ITN, licensed the film to Netflix, where it is currently streaming — almost unheard of these days for a no-budget drama with unknown actors.

Rich Kids is about a group of troubled teens from a low-income community in Houston, who break into “Los Ricos,” the local mansion with a border fence, and spend the day pretending to be rich in order to forget their difficult lives.
