No Budget Film School presents an all-new series of live, FREE Zoom webinars — No Budget Confidential.
Producer and No Budget Film School founder Mark Stolaroff conducts off-the-record interviews with no-budget filmmakers, who against all odds, willed their no-budget features into being. Get the inside scoop on how these micro-budget masterpieces were put together — all the nitty-gritty — directly from the filmmakers themselves!
Stolaroff moderates the discussion with the filmmaker, shows clips and behind-the-scenes stills that illustrate the ideas and techniques divulged, and then opens it up for questions from attendees, all live.
This episode features first-time feature director Charlie Buhler, the director/producer of the hit pandemic thriller Before The Fire. This $70k feature was subject to a bidding war earlier this year, and was ultimately sold to Dark Sky Films (The Innkeepers) with an advance that put the filmmakers in profit immediately, all while an actual pandemic was raging across the country. In true micro-budget fashion, the script for Before The Fire was written around the resources the filmmaker had back in her home state of South Dakota. She raised “micro-equity” investments and donations (through a fiscal sponsor) and it took five years to make. The success of the film has led to representation for Buhler by the prestigious boutique talent and lit agency Verve, and commercial production house Doomsday Ent.
We’ll discuss how she was able to bring so many resources to bear, including planes, National Guard troops, and even a burning house – all for free – and we’ll show clips and behind-the-scenes stills along the way, answering all your questions. Learn how you can go from being a wedding videographer to a Hollywood player by making no-budget feature films!

ABOUT CHARLIE BUHLER AND BEFORE THE FIRE:
Charlie Buhler has always used her unusual filmmaking background–growing up as a bi-racial woman in the farmlands of South Dakota – as an influence to tell her unique stories. Graduating from Notre Dame, she worked as a photographer, commercial director, and wedding videographer, on her way to making narrative projects. She collaborated with actress/writer Jenna Lyng Adams on the script for Before The Fire, after working together on a short film, adopting it to the resources they had available to them back in Buhler’s home state of South Dakota. Buhler cobbled together the shoestring budget from friends and family, raising small equity investments and donations through a fiscal sponsor, rather than using Kickstarter. She had no idea their indie thriller involving a mysterious pandemic that quickly spreads across the U.S. – which they started shooting in 2014 – would prove to be so prescient, resulting in a bidding war earlier this year.
Before The Fire: Deep in the throes of a global pandemic, up-and-coming TV star Ava Boone is forced to flee the mounting chaos in Los Angles and return to her rural hometown. But as she struggles to acclimate to a way of life she left behind long ago, her homecoming attracts a dangerous figure from her past – threatening both her and the family that serves as her only sanctuary.
