ROLES:
EMILY (LEAD): (age 7 to 9) East Asian, girl. Chinese. Small, adorable (underneath a raggedy appearance). She wears boys clothes and has a bowl haircut. Shy, the only Asian student at her suburban school and she does not fit in. Emily lives very traditionally with her grandma, mother and teenage sister. This is a potential breakout role as we are looking for a special talent with Star potential who can show emotions effortlessly, is a good reader and can memorize lines easily. Ability to speak Mandarin or Cantonese a PLUS.
TREY (LEAD): (age 7 to 9) Black, boy. Cute, well groomed, dresses trendy. Naturally friendly, he looks up to his big brother and has a little crush on Emily. He is generally a good boy who lives with and respects his Nana and brother. Should be a good reader able to memorize lines easily. A break-out memorable role for a good actor.
KYLE: (age 8 to 10) White boy. Can be larger in size for his age. A typical bully demeanor. He picks on all his classmates and uses names (some racial slurs) he should not be using. Looking for a good actor that takes direction well. If cast as a bully before, is a plus. SUPPORTING
ANNA: (age 17 to 19 years old) East Asian woman / girl. Chinese. Cute and dresses like a Rockstar. Older sister to lead actress Emily. Very modern and integrated into this American culture. She represents the Asian teen experience regarding prejudice. Loves to bake and teaches Emily. A very loving and supportive big sister. Mandarin or Cantonese language a plus. SUPPORTING
MOM: (late 30s) Emily and Anna’s mother. She’s a Chinese immigrant who’s become weary chasing the American dream. She’s close-minded and disapproves of Anna’s friends. Ability to speak Mandarin or Cantonese a PLUS. SUPPORTING.
GRANDMA: (age 60s) is Emily’s and Anna’s grandmother. Chinese. She’s right off the boat from a rural Chinese village, only recently joining her daughter in the United States. She’s opinionated, saucy and old school and makes no effort to fit into life in America. Ability to speak Mandarin or Cantonese a PLUS. SUPPORTING.
ROD: ( age 17 to 19) Black man / boy. Athletic. Trendy dresser. Very popular and into Martial Arts. Huge Bruce Lee fan and is a caring big brother to Trey. Teases him about his crush on Emily. Uses colorful slang when conversing with friends. Lives at home with his Nana and younger brother in a middle-class neighborhood. SUPPORTING
NANA: (age 40s) is Trey and Rod’s young grandmother. She’s sweet and nurturing and supports her two grandsons. SUPPORTING.
JAY: (late teens) is Rod’s fun friend and workout buddy.
JULIE: (age 7) is mean through and through. She thrives on being superior to Emily. Emily envies her looks.
MISSY: (age 7) is Julie’s sidekick.
TWO BLACK KIDS: (age 7), Trey’s friends.
MR. WALTERS (age 30s) Teacher attending recess. He’s accustomed to Kyle’s shenanigans.
SCHOOL NURSE: (age 40s) is kind and encourages Emily.
STORYLINE:
Friendships are formed with the “sweetest” things. In this compelling, timely story, a young Chinese girl and a young Black boy innocently call each other names on the playground that they do not know the meaning of, nor how hurtful they can be.
