Who will show you how to “go pro” with a short film!
SHORT FILMS ARE STILL ONE OF THE FASTEST WAYS TO LEVEL UP… IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE THEM!
Most filmmakers assume shorts are just calling cards – that nobody finances them, nobody takes them seriously, and they’re not worth the time.
But here’s the truth:
✅ Damien Chazelle used a short to get Whiplash financed, leading to an Oscar-winning feature.
✅ Taika Waititi’s short got him an Academy Award nomination—and launched his career.
✅ Ari Aster, Neill Blomkamp, and countless others have turned shorts into Hollywood success.
Short films still open doors today—leading to feature deals, representation, and major career breakthroughs.
WHY DO SOME SHORT FILMS LEAD TO STUDIO DEALS, WHILE OTHERS DISAPPEAR?
There are a lot of MYTHS about short films:
❌ “Short films are just calling cards, side projects, or stepping stones.”
❌ “There’s no money for shorts, so you have to self-fund.”
❌ “Without industry connections or a celebrity, your film won’t get noticed.”
❌ “You’ll never make money with a short.”
Because of these myths, filmmakers play small!
They cut corners, work with whoever will volunteer, and hope a festival acceptance will do the heavy lifting. But the filmmakers who succeed are using a very specific strategy to “go pro” with their short film – and we’re breaking it down step-by-step in this free masterclass!
WHO AM I & WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
I’m John Trefry, a producer with 100+ festival selections (SXSW, Tribeca, HollyShorts) and clients like Netflix, Google, and AT&T.
I’ve used short films to secure funding, attach top-tier talent, and open career-changing doors – both for myself and for many other filmmakers.
Now, I’ve teamed up with award-winning filmmaker & crowdfunding expert Justin Giddings (Slamdance-winner, Vimeo Staff Pick, $11 million crowdfunded) to show you how to use a short film to level up your career.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
• Why most short films fail to get traction – and how to avoid the “short film trap” so your work actually gets noticed.
• How to secure short film funding – even if you have no idea where to start.
• How to position your short film like a pro so you attract A-list talent, top-tier licensing deals, and real industry support.
• Secrets to getting into top-tier festivals like Sundance, SXSW, and Tribeca – so you can use them to land reps & feature deals.
PLUS: Live Q&A! Ask us anything about short films, funding, festivals, distribution – you name it, we GOT you!
FILMMAKING IS TOUGH—BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THIS ALONE!
Being a filmmaker is a tough gig.
(I mean, it certainly isn’t COURAGE that you’re lacking!)
You just need the right roadmap!
Let me show you how you can strategically channel all of that resilience, tenacity, and creativity into an asset that can propel you, your artistry, and your career to a whole new level!
